About Gilles FAU
Gilles was immersed throughout his childhood in Renaissance and Medieval painters: Bruegel, Da Vinci, Botticelli, Tintoretto and many others. As a teenager, his passion turned to illustration and English and American comics, including "Horror Cryptor Show".
He trained as an advertising designer, at a time when computer-aided drawing was in its infancy. At the age of 30, he chose to return to training focused on ancient painting techniques such as oil, tempera and fresco, at the Atelier ArtDec in Nice. These trainings allowed him to refine his knowledge of oil painting and the methods used during the Renaissance.
Later, he became involved in lyrical abstraction. The discovery of Zao Wou-Ki played a decisive role in his work in the early 2000s, particularly in the representation of clouds. Nicolas de Staël, Pierre Soulages, Yves Klein and Gerhard Richter also influenced his approach to colours and matter.
Psychoanalysis accompanied his work of introspection throughout this period.
Today, nature and the element of air continue to have a primordial importance in his work. Backgrounds, matter and transitions occupy an essential place in his artistic approach. During this year, he created a large number of works on paper, this medium proving to be the most suited to his "travelling studio" which takes him from Finistère to Dordogne, via Var, Deux-Sèvres and Aveyron. These creations oscillate between abstraction and figuration, reflecting his exploration of these two universes.
