About Gilles FAU

Gilles was immersed throughout his childhood in the paintings of the Renaissance and the Middle Ages: Bruegel, Da Vinci, Botticelli, Tintoretto and many others. In his adolescence, his passion turned towards illustration and English and American comics, notably "Horror Cryptor Show".

He trained as a commercial artist at a time when computer-aided design was still in its infancy. At the age of 30, he chose to return to training focused on traditional painting techniques such as oil, tempera, and fresco, at the Atelier ArtDec in Nice. This training allowed him to refine his knowledge of oil painting and the methods used during the Renaissance.

Later, he became involved in lyrical abstraction. The discovery of Zao Wou-Ki played a decisive role in his work in the early 2000s, particularly in his representation of clouds. Nicolas de Staël, Pierre Soulages, Yves Klein, and Gerhard Richter also influenced his approach to color and materials.

Psychoanalysis accompanied his work of introspection throughout this period.

Today, nature and the element of air continue to hold paramount importance in his work. Backgrounds, textures, and transitions occupy a central place in his artistic approach. This year, he has created a large number of works on paper, this medium proving to be the most suitable for his "traveling studio" which takes him from Finistère to Dordogne, passing through Var, Deux-Sèvres, and Aveyron. These creations oscillate between abstraction and figuration, thus reflecting his exploration of these two worlds.
