About Gilles FAU

Gilles was immersed throughout his childhood in Renaissance and Middle Ages painters: Bruegel, Da Vinci, Botticelli, Tintoretto and many others. As a teenager, his passion turned to illustration and English and American comics, notably "Horror Cryptor Show".

He trained as a commercial designer, at a time when computer-aided drawing was in its infancy. At the age of 30, he chose to return to training focused on old painting techniques such as oil, tempera and fresco, at the Atelier ArtDec in Nice. These training courses allowed him to refine his knowledge of oil painting and the methods used during the Renaissance.

Later, he became involved in lyrical abstraction. The discovery of Zao Wou-Ki played a decisive role in his work in the early 2000s, particularly in the representation of clouds. Nicolas de Staël, Pierre Soulages, Yves Klein and Gerhard Richter also influenced his approach to colours and materials.

Psychoanalysis accompanied his work of introspection throughout this period.

Today, nature and the element of air continue to have a primordial importance in his work. Backgrounds, matter and transitions occupy an essential place in his artistic approach. During this year, he created a large number of works on paper, this medium proving to be the most adapted to his "traveling studio" which takes him from Finistère to Dordogne, via Var, Deux-Sèvres and Aveyron. These creations oscillate between abstraction and figuration, thus reflecting his exploration of these two universes.
